European Parliament will be reformed

20.2.2007/BRUSSELS – European Parliament should be reformed. Presidency of legislative body established last week a working group, which is supposed to prepare drafts of reforms. Member of the group is also the Slovak Europarliamentarian Irena Belohorská from fraction of cross-benchers.
First proposal will be advanced till September 2007, where the monetary changes for the year 2008 will be prepared. Advancing of final report is expected no later than in June 2008. Then the reform should be tha basis for EP elections in 2009.
During 50 years existence of EP was made the small corrections only, which didn´t change institutional relations with European Commission and The European Council. This will be one of the aims of reforms as well as make plenum and EP committees more effective. Changes can be as a support for better discussion or improvement of participation of parliamentarians in plenum.
The first session of working group is about to take place on 28. February 2007 in Brussels.
